Ian Barker

Managing Partner

Ian founded BFY and is its Managing Partner. Our clients value the deep industry insight, straight talking and sensible approach he applies to strategy, commercial, and operations engagements. Ian has over 15 years’ experience in energy consulting, having worked with clients across energy retail, energy wholesale, and energy assets. As well as advising the boards of over 30 energy suppliers in the last 18 months, Ian has helped one of the largest energy retailers in the UK redefine their strategy, build the UK debt sale capability for numerous energy retailers, and helped to create a challenger M&A offering. Prior to founding BFY, Ian spent 5 years working in IT helping clients implement “bleeding edge” technology on Web Services, Software As A Service, and helping clients move from Desktop to web-based software solutions. Ian is married with two young children. He is a willing weekend ‘Daddy Taxi’ but remains unable to locate a kids’ club without Sat Nav.

Ben Bugg

Head of Strategy and Transaction Advisory

Ben’s focus is on supporting energy clients to transform their cost base and the delivery of organic and inorganic growth through M&A activity. He also takes an active role in our Market Insights practice, creating market intelligence that helps our clients make more informed business decisions. His recent work includes business model evaluation and scenario analysis of a challenger brand to establish a strategy that would lead them to profitability within two years. He was also the lead adviser for a large B2B market transaction, as well as for a ‘disruptor’ brand’s acquisition of another supplier. ​Ben holds a first-class bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from the University of Lancaster and a master’s degree in finance from the University of Durham. Before joining BFY, Ben’s previous career was in investment banking, which saw him hold roles at Legal and General, Lloyds, Nomura, and HSBC.

Senior Manager Financial Optimisation

Rachel leads our Financial Optimisation workstreams, working with leaders to improve profitability and cashflow. Rachel helps clients improve profitability and cashflow by identifying and solving problems related to revenue and margin leakage, as well as debt and operating costs. Rachel also provides financial expertise to support the success of M&A transactions. Rachel’s recent work includes helping a large challenger energy supplier review its cash performance and target key areas for improvement. She supported a ‘big six’ supplier to recover metering overcharges, and delivered an end to end revenue leakage diagnostic to improve its profitability and cashflow. Rachel also acted as subject matter expert supporting a client through operational and financial due diligence of a customer book in a recent acquisition. Rachel held roles in finance, commercial and operations within the energy industry for over 13 years before joining BFY.
