Alan Belfield


Alan Belfield has been the Chair of Arup since April 2019. Prior to that, Alan was the Group COO. A mechanical engineer by training, during his 27-year career at Arup, Alan has built the firm’s consulting business with specialists in Management Consulting, Planning and Technology. His industry expertise in the automotive and rail sectors has seen him lead technical, operational and financial due diligence projects with Nanjing Automotive Company and Network Rail.

Tristram Carfrae

Deputy Chairman

Tristram Carfrae is Deputy Chair of Arup. A structural engineer by training and digital pioneer, Tristram has been responsible for the design of many award-winning buildings, including the Water Cube for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He is currently leading Arup’s team helping complete Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona using digital fabrication. Tristram is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry in 2006 and received the Institution of Structural Engineers' Gold Medal in 2014.

Rob Boardman

Chief Financial Officer

Rob Boardman is Arup’s Global Chief Financial Officer. He has a wealth of Board level finance experience accumulated over nearly 20 years working with international professional services firms. Rob is a Chartered Accountant and he leads Arup’s finance function globally, engaging with leaders to drive and optimise the financial health of the firm.

Paul Coughlan

Chief Operating Officer

Paul Coughlan has been Group COO and Chair of the Management Board since April 2019. A chartered civil engineer who joined Arup in 1997, his career has encompassed projects in the highways, rail and aviation sectors. Prior to his current appointment, Paul was a Director in Ireland and a Group Leader in the Netherlands. He was appointed Europe Region Chair in 2014 and TAP Council Chair in 2018. Paul is a member of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Cordelia Chung

Non-Executive Director

Cordelia Chung has been a non-executive Director of Arup since 2020. She is Chairman of Clarksdale Investment Limited, an investment company. She spent over 20 years with IBM serving on IBM Chairman & CEO's Strategy Committee, as Regional General Manager ASEAN, General Manager China/Hong Kong, and other senior positions. She sits on the Board of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Hong Kong Government Research Grants Council, Maryknoll Convent School Foundation, and advises the Hong Kong Government through its Human Resources Planning Commission. Cordelia is a lawyer by training.

Tim Stone

Non-Executive Director

Dr Tim Stone has been a non-executive Director of Arup since 2015. He has been senior adviser to the secretary of state for the Department of Energy and Climate Change since 2007 and holds two visiting professorships at University College London. Tim is also a non-executive member of the board of the European Investment Bank.

Global People Leader

Jenni Emery joined the firm in January 2019 as Arup’s Global People and Culture Leader. A lawyer by background, Jenni brings twenty years’ experience of designing and delivering strategy, managing change and unlocking potential in some of the world’s leading professional services firms. Jenni is the author of Leading for Organisational Change: Building Purpose, Motivation and Belonging, a trustee of Spurgeons Children’s Charity and a non-exec advisor to start-ups in the legal sector. Her brief at Arup is to develop a world-class approach to our people and to preserve and evolve our culture so that our business, our people, our clients and our communities all flourish. Jenni is passionate about the power of purpose, storytelling and wholehearted leadership to transform business and society.
